佛陀:
It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.
征服你自己胜于打赢千场战役,那时真正的胜利才会是你的,没有人可以夺走它,不管是天使还是恶魔,天堂或地狱都无法夺走它。
佛陀:
Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Suffering follows an evil thought as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draws it.
我们的生活由自己的心智所打造;我们将变成我们所想的。痛苦跟随恶念就像车轮跟着拉着它走的公牛。
Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.
就像蜡烛没有火就无法燃烧一样,人没有精神生活就无法生存。
佛陀:
A family is a place where minds come in contact with one another. If these minds love one another the home will be as beautiful as a flower garden. But if these minds get out of harmony with one another it is like a storm that plays havoc with the garden.
家是一个许多心智互相接触的地方,如果这些心智彼此相爱,这家将美如花园。如果这些心智彼此不和谐,那就会像风暴一样将花园弄得乱七八糟。
佛陀:
Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.
沈思(冥想)带来智慧;缺乏沈思使人留在无知。弄清楚什么东西带你前进以及什么东西扯你后腿,然后选择通往智慧的路。
Meditate. Live purely. Be quiet. Do your work with mastery. Like the moon, come out from behind the clouds! Shine.

佛陀:
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.
抓住愤怒不放就像手里拿着一块烧红的煤炭意图扔给别人一样;烧伤的是你自己。

The mind is the source of happiness and unhappiness.
心智是快乐与不快乐的源头。
He who experiences the unity of life sees his own Self in all beings, and all beings in his own Self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye.
那体验过生命统一的人在所有的存在中看见他的「真我」,也在他的「真我」中看见所有的存在,因此他以不偏不依的眼光看待每一件事。
佛陀:
On life's journey
Faith is nourishment,
Virtuous deeds are a shelter,
Wisdom is the light by day and
Right mindfulness is the protection by night.
If a man lives a pure life nothing can destroy him;
If he has conquered greed nothing can limit his freedom.
在人生旅途上
信仰是滋养品,
善行是避难所,
智慧是白天的光而
正觉是夜晚的防护。
人如果生活纯净没有任何东西能摧毁他;
如果他已经征服了贪婪没有任何东西能限制他的自由。
佛陀:
There is no fire like greed,
No crime like hatred,
No sorrow like separation,
No sickness like hunger of heart,
And no joy like the joy of freedom.
没有比贪婪更火的,
没有比恨更罪孽的,
没有比分别更难过的,
没有比心的饥饿更重的病,
也没有比自由的喜悦更喜悦的了。
佛陀:
Live in Joy, In love,
Even among those who hate.
要活在喜悦与爱当中,
即便是身处怀恨的人群中。
Live in joy, In health,
Even among the afflicted.
要活在喜悦与健康中,
即便是身处痛苦的人群中。
Live in joy, In peace,
Even among the troubled.
要活在喜悦与平和中,
即便是身处麻烦的人群中。
佛陀:
As the fletcher whittles and makes straight his arrows, so the master directs his straying thoughts.
就像造箭者削木以使他的箭笔直一样,大师引导自己散乱的念头。
What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: Our life is the creation of our mind.
今天的我们是昨天我们的想法的结果,而我们此刻的想法建构了我们明天的生活:我们的生活是我们心智所创造的。
佛陀:
Believe nothing on the faith of traditions,
even though they have been held in honor
for many generations and in diverse places.
Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it.
Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past.
Do not believe what you yourself have imagined,
persuading yourself that a God inspires you.
Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests.
After examination, believe what you yourself have tested
and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.
不要相信传统的信仰,
即使它们已经光荣地传承了好几世代以及很多地方。
不要因为很多人说而相信。
不要相信以前的圣人的信仰。
不要相信你自己的想象,认为自己受到一个神的启发。

佛陀:
Health, contentment and trust
Are your greatest possessions,
And freedom your greatest joy.
健康、满足与信任
是你最大的资产,
自由则是你最大的喜悦。
Look within. Be still.
Free from fear and attachment,
Know the sweet joy of living in the way.
看里面,保持平静。
摆脱恐惧与执着,
就会知道修行生活的甜蜜喜悦。
One of his students asked Buddha, "Are you the messiah?"
"No", answered Buddha.
"Then are you a healer?"
"No", Buddha replied.
"Then are you a teacher?" the student persisted.
"No, I am not a teacher."
"Then what are you?" asked the student, exasperated.
"I am awake", Buddha replied.
有个学生问佛陀:「你是救世主吗?」
「不是,」佛陀回答。
「那你是个治疗师吗?」
「不是,」佛陀回答。
「那你是个老师吗?」学生坚持问道。
「不,我不是个老师。」
「那你是什么?」学生恼怒地问说。
「我是清醒的。」佛陀回答。
************ 「佛」Buddha这字的原意就是「清醒」,古人翻译为「觉」。
佛陀:
An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.
经过发展且付诸实践的观念远比纯观念重要得多。
Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.
语词同时具有毁灭与治疗的力量。当语词既真且和善,它们就能改变我们的世界。
佛陀:
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
除非经由你自己的理性及你自己的常识所同意,什么都不要相信,不管是在哪里读到的,或是谁说的,不管我是否说过。
The Four Noble Truths:
that suffering is an ingrained part of existence; that the origin of suffering is craving for sensuality, acquisition of identity, and annihilation; that suffering can be ended; and that following the Noble Eightfold Path is the means to accomplish this.
四项崇高的真理:
痛苦是存在的根深蒂固的一部份;
痛苦的根源来自热衷于感官享受、身份的认同、以及毁灭;
这些痛苦是可以消除的;
遵循崇高的八正道是消除这些痛苦的方法。 (古代翻译为四圣谛:苦、集、灭、道。)
佛陀:
We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.
我们就是我们所想的。我们随着我们的想法的升起而存在。透过我们的想法,我们塑造了世界。
We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
我们由自己的想法形塑;我们变成自己所想的。当心智纯净时,喜悦像影子一样跟随永不离开。
佛陀:
When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.
当人有了讨厌邪恶的感觉时,当人感到平静时,人乐于聆听好的教导;当人有了这些感觉且欣赏它们时,人就不再恐惧了。
佛陀:
What is the appropriate behavior for a man or a woman in the midst of this world, where each person is clinging to his piece of debris? What's the proper salutation between people as they pass each other in this flood?
在这人人都执着于他那份骨骸的俗世当中对一个男人或女人来说什么是适当的行为?在这洪流当中人们彼此传递的解决方案里有什么是适当的?
佛陀:
Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.
平静来自里面,不要外求。
Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.
如同宝藏从土里被揭露一样,美德透过善行而显露,而智慧则从平静的心智显示。要平安通过人类生活的迷宫,人需要智慧的光与美德的引导。
佛陀:
It is a man's own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.
人是被自己的心智诱惑到邪恶的道路上,而不是他的敌人或仇人。
In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.
在天上,并没有东西方的分别;「分别」是由人自己的心智创造而后却相信它们是真的。
佛陀:
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
在争论当中当我们感到愤怒时,我们就已经停止为真理而奋斗,而开始为自己奋斗。
He is not awake who insults another, nor he who strikes another.
侮辱别人的人是昏睡的,攻击别人的人也一样。
佛陀:
He who loves 50 people has 50 woes; he who loves no one has no woes.
那爱五十个人的人有五十个仇人;那不爱任何人的人没有仇人。
Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.
带来平静的一个字胜过一千个空洞的文字。
佛陀:
However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them?
无论你读过或说过多少神圣的文字,如果你不将其付诸行动,它们又会带给你什么好处?
佛陀:
An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.

佛陀:
If a man hold himself dear, let him guard himself carefully, keeping vigil like a watchman in the night.

Men who do not seek virtue perish like old herons in a lake without fish. They lie like worn-out bows, sighing after the past.

The tongue like a sharp knife... Kills without drawing blood.
舌头像一把锋利的刀…杀人不见血。
The mind is everything. What you think you become.

Those who view their deaths correctly cease their quarrels at once.
能够正确看待自己的死亡的人立即停止争吵。
佛陀:
The wise ones fashioned speech with their thought, sifting it as grain is sifted through a sieve.
智者用他们的思想来形塑言词,就像谷子经由筛子过滤出来一样。
The whole secret of existence is to have no fear. Never fear what will become of you, depend on no one. Only the moment you reject all help are you freed.
存在的整个秘密就是无惧。不要害怕你将变成什么,不要依赖任何人。只有在拒绝所有援助的时刻你才是自由的。
The way is not in the sky. The way is in the heart.
道不在天上,道在心里。

To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.
再也没有比怀疑的习惯更可怕的了。怀疑使人分裂,它是瓦解友谊以及破坏人际关系的毒药。它是激怒与伤人的荆棘;它是杀人的利刃。
There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.

To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.
让身体保持健康是一项责任…否则我们就无法让我们的心智保持强壮与清晰。
To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.
要感激健康的身体、带给家人真正的快乐、带给所有的人和平,人首先得规范并控制自己的心智。如果人能控制他的心智他就能找到开悟之道,而所有的智慧与美德也会自然来临。
佛陀:
Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.
不管我们说什么都应该谨慎选择要说的话语,因为人们会听到它们也会被它们影响,会产生善或恶的结果。
We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.
我们是由自己的思想形成与打造的。那些由无私想法形塑的人,他们的言行会带来喜乐,喜乐跟随他们就像影子一样永不离开。
佛陀:
You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.
你可以在整个宇宙中寻找一个比你自己更值得爱与珍惜的人,但你哪里也找不到。你,你自己,就像宇宙中的任何一个人一样,值得你的爱与珍惜。
Without health life is not life; it is only a state of langour and suffering - an image of death.

As a cowherd with his staff drives his cows to pasture, so does Death drive the life of men.

You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.

佛陀:
Be not a friend of the world.
Look on the world as a bubble, as a mirage; the king of death does not see him who thus looks down on the world.
别与世界为友。
看待世界如泡影,如海市蜃楼;冥王看不见那看轻世界的人。
Fools are immersed in the world but the discerning do not cling to it.
愚蠢的人深陷世界无法自拔,悟道的人则毫不依恋。
This world is dark, few only can see here; few only can escape like birds from the net.
这世界黑暗无光,这里只有少数人能看得见;只有少数人能像鸟一样逃离巢穴。
佛陀:
The greatest of all conquerors is the man who conquers himself.
最伟大的征服者是那征服自己的人。
If a man subdues himself then he may teach others.
一个征服了他自己的人可以教导别人。
佛陀:
The wise leave the way of darkness and follow the way of light. Calling nothing his own, the wise purges himself from all impurities of the heart.
智者远离黑暗的道路而跟随光明之路。不拥有任何东西,智者洗净心中所有不洁的东西。

His thought is quiet, as are his words and deeds. A man who has obtained freedom by true knowledge has become a quiet man.
他的思想安静下来,他的言行也是。透过真知识而获得自由的人会变成一个安静的人。
佛陀:
Do not have evil-doers for friends, do not have low people for friends; have virtuous people for friends, have for friends the best of men.
不要和作恶的人作朋友,不要和低等的人作朋友;要和有道德的人作朋友,要和最好的人作朋友。
The good walk on, whatever befall. They do not prattle or long for pleasure. Whenever touched by happiness or sorrow, they appear neither elated nor depressed.
不管遭遇什么,良善的人都会继续前进。他们不闲聊或渴望作乐。无论何时遭逢快乐或悲痛,他们既不会洋洋得意也不沮丧。
佛陀:
Earnestness is the path of immortality, thoughtlessness the path of death. Those who are earnest do not die while those who are thoughtless are as if dead already.
认真是永恒之道,粗心大意则是死亡之路。那些认真的人不死,那些粗心的人则像已经死了似的。
If a man is earnest and exerts himself, if he is ever mindful, if he acts with consideration and restraint, he may make himself an island which no flood can overwhelm.
如果一个人认真且尽力,如果他一直都谨慎,如果他的行动经过深思熟虑且有节制,他就能为自己创造一座洪水无法淹没的岛屿。
Senseless and foolish folk fall into sloth. The wise man guards earnestness as his best treasure.
迟钝且愚蠢的人会落入怠惰。智者将认真视为他最珍贵的宝藏。
The learned man drives away vanity by earnestness.
智者以认真来驱逐虚荣。
佛陀:
'He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,' in those who harbor such thoughts hatred never cease.
怀有「他虐待我,他打我,他打败我,他抢劫我,」这种想法的人他的恨意永不止息。
Hatred ceases never by hatred. Hatred ceased by love; this is an eternal law.
恨永远无法透过恨来止息。恨的止息靠爱;这是个永恒的法则。
佛陀:
All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him.
我们的一切是我们所思所想的结果。
如果一个人的言行依据邪恶的想法,痛苦将跟随他。
If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.
一个人的言行如果依据的是一种纯净的思想,快乐就会跟着他,就像影子一样永远不离开他。
